We designed a printed running route guide for a UK Ekiden event, helping introduce an unfamiliar race format to a broad audience. The guide combined mapping, leg-specific information, and brand-led design to create a clear, engaging publication that supported pre-race understanding and reflected the professionalism of the event.
FT UK NIKKEI EKIDEN
Strengthening the UK Ekiden with a data-rich running route guide

The guide needed to communicate complex route information within limited space, for an audience largely unfamiliar with Ekiden racing. It required careful hierarchy, clarity, and cultural sensitivity – blending Japanese-inspired mapping conventions with an existing UK brand. Information also had to support both whole-route understanding and individual runner needs.
We combined accurate route mapping with user-focused design, including consistent-scale leg schematics for individual runners. GPX data was refined into clear, bespoke visuals, with key details highlighted through hierarchy and colour. The final design aligned with existing branding while introducing subtle enhancements, resulting in a cohesive, practical, and accessible guide.
Impact
“The TDL team approached this with real rigour and creativity. They didn’t just map a route; they created a clear visual narrative that made the scale and structure of the Ekiden immediately understandable. Their ability to balance technical precision with elegant, accessible design was exceptional. The finished guide played a significant role in helping participants confidently navigate the event and contributed meaningfully to the overall professionalism and experience of Year 2. We’re incredibly proud of what was achieved together.”
-Anna Dingley, founder of UK Ekiden

The FT Nikkei UK Ekiden Year 3 Route Guide supported 35 teams – and hundreds of supporters – on the 112 km Thames Path route between Windsor and Reading.

Mapping the UK Ekiden route required turning a complex, multi-stage relay course into a clear and accessible guide for a wide range of users. TDL met this challenge with impressive precision and creativity. ”
IIID award
An award-winning project
Since the UK Ekiden Year 2 event, the Route Guide has received further recognition, winning a 2026 International Institute for Information Design (IIID) Award in the Didactics category. For us, the award reflects what the project was always about: transforming complexity into understanding.
What began as curiosity about a Japanese running tradition evolved into an award-winning piece of communication design that connected cultures, supported participants, and helped bring an ambitious event to life.
