TDL rebrand

Complexity, clarity, and the next chapter of TDL

Introduction

Our rebrand isn’t just a facelift

Since TDL was founded over a decade ago, a lot has changed. As you’d expect, we’ve changed too. We’ve grown from our founder, Oliver, working solo, to a team of 14. Earlier this year we opened a second studio in Australia that Oliver now heads up as General Manager. And the way we work has also evolved, particularly since Covid, with remote working and global collaboration now part of everyday life.

The world around us has changed too. We’re living through a period shaped by AI, video, connectivity and an almost overwhelming amount of information. At the same time, there’s a growing demand for authenticity and clarity. We want things faster, but we still want them to be meaningful. We want efficiency, but not at the expense of creativity. It’s a constant challenge. And it’s one we know pretty well.

Reflecting on our journey

With all that change, we can also be honest and say that, for a while, we hadn’t quite found the right words to articulate where TDL fits into the world.

For years, our proposition was ‘Making information understandable’ (it certainly has been since I joined TDL in 2014). This proposition has served us well. And fundamentally, it’s still a part of what we do. But as TDL has evolved, it started to feel a little too passive.

It described an outcome, but not the scale of the challenge involved in getting there. It didn’t capture enough of our curiosity, our creativity or the transformation we can bring to a piece of communication. Because, on reflection, we really like difficult problems.

This proposition has served us well. And fundamentally, still a part of what we do. But as TDL has evolved, it started to feel a little too passive. It described an outcome, but not the scale of the challenge involved in getting there. It didn’t capture enough of our curiosity, our creativity or the transformation we can bring to a piece of communication. Because, on reflection, we really like difficult problems.

We get excited by blank canvases, complicated questions and huge amounts of detail. We’re information designers, but our role goes much further than making something look good. We question, organise, simplify, challenge and create. We help people find the story that matters and communicate it in a way other people can understand, in a way that it means something. And at a time when human creativity and curiosity are being challenged and redefined, saying that feels more important than ever.

Defining our proposition

What are we really here to do?

So, as part of our rebrand, we came together as a group of employee-owners to ask one simple question: what are we really here to do?  The answer became our new proposition:  Exceptional clarity from extraordinary complexity.  Anyone who has worked with us will know that we can be a little humble about what we do. We wanted our new proposition to have more confidence. Extraordinary complexity matters because that’s where we do our best work.

Whether it’s a must-win bid, healthcare information, a complex business story or simply an idea that exists in someone’s head but hasn’t yet found its way onto the page, the challenges our clients bring us are rarely straightforward. Often, they’re high stakes. Getting the message right matters.

That’s why empathy is such an important part of how we work. Before we can create clarity, we need to understand the complexity. What does the information mean? Who needs to understand it? What do they need to feel, know or do as a result? And exceptional clarity is the standard we set for ourselves at the other end. We don’t just want something to be clearer.

We want to create something genuinely better. Something that informs, inspires, engages or instructs. Something our clients are proud to put in front of their audience. Clarity isn’t about stripping everything away until something is simple. It’s about understanding something deeply enough to make it clear.

Closing thoughts

Helping you thrive

Our journey from complexity to clarity is ultimately what connects to our wider purpose: helping you thrive. ‘You’ meaning our clients, our partners and the people who ultimately interact with the things we create. Our responsibility is to take what we’re given and make it better. To create communications that people can understand, trust, and act on. When we do our job well, our clients feel proud of what we’ve created together. Their audiences understand it. And it makes a difference.

For us, that all starts and ends with trust. Our clients trust us with the things that are difficult to explain, difficult to solve and too important to get wrong. We don’t take that trust lightly. Our ambition is to become the most trusted information design specialists in the business. Our new proposition gives us a clearer way of expressing both the challenge we embrace and the transformation we want to create. Trust us to help you move from extraordinary complexity to exceptional clarity.
